Andrisoft WANGuard Platform is an easy to use software that provides IP traffic monitoring, IP traffic accounting and optionally network protection against DoS, DDoS and DrDoS atacks. The supported traffic monitoring methods are: Port Mirroring ( Switched Port Analyzer – SPAN, Roving Analysis Port ), Network TAP, In-line Deployment, NetFlow, sFlow and Huawei NetStream. WANGuard Platform includes technologies found on Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Firewalls, Network Behavior Analysis, Network Perimeter Security, DDoS protection and traffic monitoring software.

It allows you to quickly and easily set up and run monitoring and filtering server(s) for networks. Using the integrated web interface, with just few mouse clicks you can view:

• Historic and real-time network traffic parameters about the data flowing through router interfaces and switch ports ( packets/s, bits/s, bytes/s, IPs/s, flows/s etc. )
• Extensive MRTG-style traffic graphs and traffic accounting reports for IP addresses and IP classes in your network for any time-frame, including 95th percentile for burstable billing.
• Historic and real-time network traffic statistics ( top talkers per protocol, number of IPs, top protocols, protocols distribution, ASN distribution, TCP and UDP ports distribution etc. )
• Historic and real-time recordings about the sources and destinations that use bandwidth above the acceptable limits
• Per endpoint insightful report analytics and audit trail analysis for detected traffic anomalies
• Historic and real-time information about DoS, DDoS and DrDoS attacks in your network

The recorded data is stored in an internal SQL database that can be easily queried and referenced. The recorded monitoring data can be viewed through a rich, Ajax-based web interface.

WANGuard 4.0 adds a brand new Web User Interface, performance improvements, sFlow support, 95th percentile, greatly improved traffic accounting and traffic graphs support, advanced permissions for user roles.

Now you can charge your mobile phone wherever you go … but just remember to take a Coca-Cola can with you! Chinese developer Daizi Zheng has developed a concept Nokia phone that is powered by Coca-Cola. The phone has been developed as part of an eco-project to minimise the effect caused by conventional batteries which are expensive and hurt the environment at the time of disposal. The Nokia cylindrical mobile phone will be powered by a bio-battery, which will generate electricity from sugar through the use of enzymes and will be four times longer than traditional batteries, reports

Following in the footsteps of its German counterpart, the French government advises its citizens to stop using Internet Explorer until critical security vulnerability in the browser is resolved.

Rate this news: (1 Votes)
Tuesday, January 19, 2010: The French government has issued an advisory to computer users, recommending that they switch to a different Web browser, such as Firefox or Google Chrome. France’s move follows that of the German government, which recently discovered that Internet Explorer contained a dangerous security flaw that could be exploited by hackers and cybercriminals.

The version of the browser vulnerable to the attack mounted on Google is Internet Explorer 6 (IE6), which was first released in 2000 and is standard on Windows XP. Despite its age and vulnerability to hacking, IE6 is still the most widely used browser in the world, ahead of more secure versions, and rivals’ alternatives, such as the free Firefox, Opera or Safari browsers.

Microsoft admitted that its Internet Explorer browser was the weak link in recent attacks by hackers who hacked into e-mail accounts of human rights activists in China. But it said that the German government had gone too far in its over-reaction, and that general users were not at risk.

But that did not stop the French government issuing a bulletin through Certa, a government agency responsible for managing and protecting against cyber threats. The bulletin said that all versions of Internet Explorer were affected by the security flaw, and suggested people use an alternative browser. However, security experts say that computer users should only use a different Web browser if they are confident they know what they’re doing.

IT security and data protection firm Sophos has commented on the French government’s advice. “My advice is to only switch from Internet Explorer if you really know what you are doing with the browser you’re swapping to,” said Graham Cluley, senior security advisor, Sophos. “Otherwise it might be a case of ‘better the devil you know’. Every browser has its security issues, so switching may remove this current risk but could expose you to another. My guess is that Microsoft will be working hard to release an out-of-band patch for the vulnerability. They will be keen to fix the serious security problem before more damage is done to Internet Explorer’s reputation.”

Microsoft sought to allay users’ fear about the risks of using Internet Explorer in a blog posting on Sunday, saying, “We are only seeing a very limited number of targeted attacks against a small subset of corporations. The attacks that we have seen to date, including public proof-of-concept exploit code, are only effective against Internet Explorer 6.”

The British government and armed forces, however, are to continue their widespread use of the version of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser in spite of the French and German governments advisory to people to stop using it.

Free and open-source software, also F/OSS, FOSS, or FLOSS (free/libre/open source software) is software that is liberally licensed to grant the right of users to study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its source code. This approach has gained both momentum and acceptance as the potential benefits have been increasingly recognized by both individuals and corporate players.

Free and open source software is an inclusive term which covers both free software and open source software which, despite describing similar development models, have differing cultures and philosophies. Free software focuses on the philosophical freedoms it gives to users while open source focuses on the perceived strengths of its peer-to-peer development model. Many people relate to both aspects and so ‘F/OSS’ is a term that can be used without particular bias towards either political approach. The FLOSS Concept Booklet describes the differences as legal differences:

Legally, Free Software and Open-Source take quite different attitudes to sharing source code and what obligations those who share legally require. The different attitudes are a product of political ideology and cannot be easily reconciled – though they can be neutrally explained (only) by referring to the legal concepts of ‘share-alike’ and a ‘consortium’. The term FLOSS emerged to simply avoid having to discuss or define these ideas to ordinary users who want to know about the implications for end users. Which do not normally include the legal negotiations between contributors.

Free software licences and open source licenses are used by many software packages. The licenses have important differences, which mirror the differences in the ways the two kinds of software can be used and distributed and reflect differences in the philosophy behind the two.

By mid 2007 enough companies were opening some source to hop on the open source bandwagon, while keeping other advanced functionality closed, that the common meaning of “open source” came to include what is now called Commercial Open Source Software (COSS) as well. Today either the specificterms free software/FOSS/FLOSS or COSS are often used instead of the more general term “open source” in order to differentiate between the two different models and preserve the original meaning of the free software/FOSS/FLOSS space.

what is open source and what’s foos?????

Open source is sold and FOSS is not

//

I think I finally figured it out FOSS software can’t be sold while open source can be.

This is a feature, not a bug. It’s why the GNU smiles.

Much of my confusion involves the GPL and FOSS. The GPL was created as a FOSS license but it remains the most popular open source license out there.

I explained the reason in my 2006 piece The Open Source Incline. Giving outside contributors the same rights you enjoy is the best way to encourage their participation. For an open source company the GPL helps drive development and the construction of a community, which it needs to thrive.

So the GPL, while created for FOSS, is also used by open source. And there remains a key difference between FOSS software and open source, which Matt nails. Open source is sold and FOSS is not.

What marks a FOSS project is not its license but the motivation behind it. A FOSS project is not driven by dreams of financial gain. It’s driven by dreams of service, of shared effort helping all boats rise. The Mozilla Foundation is not about the Benjamins even though Firefox uses a Mozilla license rather than the GPL. Money keeps things moving but no one is getting rich.

Open source combines the shared effort of FOSS and marries it to the profit motive. Open source developers share code in order to sell support, or services, or products built using the code. The key word in the previous sentence is sell.

Open source is sold, FOSS is downloaded. Open source companies are looking for a profit, FOSS projects are looking to get by, to grow, to serve and to share.

Matt makes his living as an open source executive with Alfresco. Alfresco uses the GPL, but it’s an open source company, not a FOSS project. Alfresco wants to make money. Making money is good.

But how much money? To an open source company, the answer is as much as possible. To a FOSS project the answer is enough to get by.

There is nothing wrong with either model. Both can, in fact, use the same licenses, or different licenses. But if someone comes to you wearing a suit, a smile, and their hand out, it matters little what license their wares may carry. They’re still a salesman.

They’re open source.

Having introduced a selection of highly stylish phones. The LG-GD900 is expected to make a new fashion statement and I’m quite sure it will.
When opened, its sliding, translucent keypad illuminates a cool glow that reflects the phone’s sleek and polished silver body. It also tries to live up to the highest level of technical features expected in a premium caliber handset, including its dedicated Bluetooth headset. The specs have not however, been released just yet.

The LG-GD900 is scheduled for release during the second quarter of 2009 and the phone’s advanced features will be unveiled at that time.
